Artist Biography

Suzie Sullivan's lifelong passion for art and craft work began as a child in the UK. Throughout her life she has always had hobby projects on the go but could only have dreamt where it would lead. She has always had a fascination for Ireland and moved there in 2001. She loves what Ireland has to offer - music, culture, ancient legends and fairy tales and the wide-open spaces - and all of this is reflected in her work. She is now known throughout Ireland and beyond for her work in fibre art, polymer clay and flame worked glass. She has won several prestigious awards for her art and craft and has participated in many exhibitions and shows. She has also shared her extensive knowledge with many students over the years. Suzie is a self-taught artist, preferring to work and experiment in the peace of her own studio tucked away in the beautiful wild landscape of the west of Ireland.

Artist Statement

Nestled in the beautiful landscape of Co Mayo, Ireland is a small studio where self-taught artist Suzie Sullivan spends her days creating art and craft. For many years Suzie has been better known as a textile artist working with wool and fibre, but in 2019 she changed direction and started working with polymer clay. This new material has opened a whole new world of texture and creativity. Her work represents a unique vision of an imaginary world of nature, capturing extravagant forms, colours and patterns derived from the natural world we live in. This latest body of small sculptures is titled ‘If you go Down to the Woods Today’. These sculptures are meticulously detailed and are intended to evoke dreams, childhood memories and the desire to escape to a world of one’s own making. They are made with a wire armature built up with layers of polymer clay and richly embellished with unique colour blends and complex polymer clay cane work.

Suzie’s art can be viewed on her Instagram.
