The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public.  Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art.  2. Their artist biography.  3.  Their artist statement.  These elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.  This was the 12th “Solo Art Series” Art Competition that the gallery has conducted.

Below is Renee’s Artist Biography, her Artist Statement, along with 14 of her portraits.  We hope that you will take the time to read Renee’s information and to take a look at her artwork.

Artist Biography:

Renee Waldman Brettler was born in 1956 in Sudbury, Ontario, where she lived for two years before moving to Toronto. Her passion for art began at an early age when she discovered the delight of crayons. Not content to merely fill in the pictures of her colouring book, she would, instead, redraw them on a separate piece of paper. Discovering her ability to capture the likeness of an image was the beginning what would become of a lifelong fascination with drawing and painting.

In 1981 while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto, Renee had her first successful solo art exhibit at the Del Bello Gallery. A failed marriage, however, would force her to choose between ‘the path of her heart’ and ‘the path of her head’. Ultimately, she would opt for economic independence rather than life as a struggling artist. To this end, she completed a Bachelor of Education and an Ontario Teaching Certificate. Renee remarried, had three children, and a teaching career that spanned 30 years.

As a Visual Arts Specialist, she always found creative ways to integrate the Arts into her classroom and school environment. Since retiring from teaching in 2014, Renee is finally able to turn her attention once more to her first love ~ art. She is self-taught and has worked with acrylic, oil paint, graphite and coloured pencils. Currently she is excited to have rediscovered the sheer power and simplicity of pencil on paper.

Artist Statement:

It is my exquisite joy to do what I love. Art is not my work. It is my passion! I have always found the human face fascinating. To me, each is a canvas upon which life etches itself and ultimately transforms into a work of art. In every portrait, my quest is to reveal that which is not readily seen. To that end, I magnify each image as if it were viewed under a microscope. This allows me to see the detailed landscape of each face in an almost cellular way. Every portrait begins with me looking into the eyes of a stranger, but ends with a profound sense that I've come to know this person very well.
