The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 3 media categories of the Painting & Other Category, Photography & Digital Category and the 3 Dimensional Art categories.
The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of September 2020 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.
The overall winning artists’ category of the 4th Annual "Patterns" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion. In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing.
Winning artists will also have their art exhibition results posted and promoted on ArtJobs/ArtWeek. Artweek/Artjobs produces 800,000 page impressions per month, 280,000 website visitors per month and has 30,000 newsletter subscribers.

1st Place - Stan Johnson - “Gym Rats”
After moving to Arizona in 1989, Stan co-founded Recent Developments, LLC with his partner Cheryl Hrudka. Recent Developments is a fine art photographic concern specializing in landscapes and architecture for corporate and hospital environments. Although the company continues along this path, the partners took a new direction shortly after 2007. Both began to explore the virtually unlimited non-representational possibilities offered by a variety of digital software.
Stan is a structural expressionist. At first, the two concepts seem ill suited. This awkward synthesis creates a dynamic tension in his work. By alternating structure (expression) in the figure and expression (structure) in the ground, the forces at play can be reconciled.
Stan is represented by Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery in Los Angeles, and by Art Design Consultants Gallery in Cincinnati, OH. His work may be seen in private collections and throughout the US and Canada.

2nd Place - Darcy Leopold Polny - “Fragile”
Darcy Polny has always been passionate about art. As a young boy, Darcy was influenced by his uncle Edd Uluschak, a renowned Canadian political cartoonist. To expand his horizons, Darcy completed four years in Visual Communications at Alberta College of Art, now Alberta University of the Arts. Darcy worked in graphic design and advertising for various firms as art director for a number of years. He won several awards for advertising and illustration.
In 1994, Darcy, with artist wife Lea, founded Groundwater Communications, a successful graphic design firm for 25 years. Darcy also authored and illustrated two children’s books and donated several hundred books to the students attending his inner city elementary school in Edmonton. The demands of the advertising industry and the need to express his creativity without boundaries, lead Darcy to paint to fulfill his creative spirit. Darcy has explored all mediums, oils, acrylics, pastels and most recently watercolours.
Over the years, Darcy’s work has been featured in galleries and private shows in Alberta and British Columbia. His work is part of the City of Lloyminster collection, Cross Cancer Institute and many private collections. Limited edition hockey prints from a series by Darcy were given to Bobby Orr.
In recent years, Darcy has immersed himself in painting full time. The newest works in watercolour convey his love for colour, form and nature.

3rd Place - Gareth Jones - “Unfurled”
Photography and digital art are Gareth’s artistic releases. After taking up photography after a career as a forensic scientist, Gareth has been able to bring his imagination, vision, and inquisitive mind to visual life. Gareth’s art mostly explores bold abstracts or unique perspectives that are created from his original photographs or digital art pieces. Gareth uses both monochromatic and colour perspectives in final images as he believes they evoke quite different emotions in viewers.
By looking to connect images to viewers – and in these uneasy times, Gareth wants to balance life. He wants to present moments of beauty, quiet joy or intrigue in balance with the need to draw attention to important issues.
Everyone needs a break from the unending negative news all around the world and Gareth attempts to give people a breather from the stress of today’s world. This is not to say he doesn't bring difficult issues into his art but Gareth is convinced that balance is the critical issue, especially as for most of us, our worlds are not in balance. He hopes his art helps to heal this disparate world through creative expressions, thoughtful moments and visual enjoyment or challenge.
Gareth never says no to an image, be it traditional or not, be it something he’s created or captured, but simply because it shouts out to him "Look at me". He’s photographing the world with all its wonders and creations, big and small, that simply make him stop and look, or think, or smile, or feel and then he puts his take on it. Gareth’s images are that gift - a moment to look, think, smile or feel whatever the image calls up in you. He lets his curiosity fuel the exploration of the world and from that abstract, nature, urban and imaginative images arise.
Gareth believes that whenever viewers purchase or comment on images, they connect with him. Often that connection is the breather he wants to provide, he’s touching people, reaching them with his images and that is what inspires him.

4th Place - Tim McEnerney - “Found 1”
Simply put, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”
Well, lately with my photography, common trash has become treasure for my eye. Give me a salvage yard, deserted town, or old barn and I’m in photo heaven.
Places like the “Gas Station Museum” outside of Taos, New Mexico, the auto salvage yards in Rifle and Basalt, Colorado and the ghost town in Cisco, Utah have been a gold mine to me as a source of images.
Suspend the reality of what the object IS – rather see what I view of this “other world”
Found Objects: Describes my photographic art which I have created from undisguised, but often modified objects, that are not normally considered materials from which art is made, often because they already have a non-art function…….or a common object that had been selected and not materially altered in any way.

5th Place - Margaret Bayalis - “Emerging”
Margaret Bayalis began painting at an early age and was drawn to the human figure as a subject. She studied graphic design/illustration at the University of DE. Thereafter she began her professional career as director of publications at Wesley College in Dover, DE. Margaret continued her studio work throughout exploring the use of various media including pastels, colored pencil and watercolors eventually settling on her preferred medium of oil paint. Bayalis achieved critical acclaim and collectors for these works throughout the northeast.
In 2002, Margaret moved to St. Petersburg Fl. where she now maintains a studio. Working as a full-time artist allows Bayalis to be fully immersed in her exploration of the figure as a subject in her studio. Noted for her rich palette and painterly style, Margaret has received numerous awards and critical recognition for her paintings, which have been exhibited throughout Florida and the northeast in galleries and museums. Her work has also been selected for inclusion in national and international juried shows. Her paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections.

6th Place - Carlos G Scott - “cgs004”
Carlos’ work has evolved from producing strictly representational themes to include abstract, semi-abstract, and impressionist images that highlight textures, colors, and forms found in common every-day subjects. Among his current motifs, you can find reflections in the Miami River, the natural decaying process of leaves and plants, as well as the natural effects of time, weather and oxidation on metals and other materials. Though they may retain strong aspects of their original forms, many of the images are striking for their divergence, or, transformation into new forms, textures and colors that are choreographed in a spectacular movement across the spectrum.
His style and vision endeavors to present something different that encompasses a clear overall impression that reveals additional interesting features and textures upon closer inspection.
Artists including Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier Bresson, Georgia O'Keefe, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso Jean-Michel Basquiat and Salvador Dali are prominent among the influences in shaping Carlos' artistic vision.
Carlos has exhibited his work in several prestigious galleries in New York, Washington DC, and Art Basel in Florida.

7th Place - Tara S Merkt - “Carapace Cadence”
Tara Merkt is a native of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Merkt works predominately in scratchboard art; a 2-dimensional, subtractive medium that involves the use of abrasive tools to directly remove a surface layer of one value (typically dark) to expose a secondary layer of a contrasting value (typically white). She is currently an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. Merkt trained at the University of Minnesota (Studio Arts BA - 2000) and the University of Wisconsin (Master of Art Therapy - 2003).
Tara is drawn to the mystery that involves working in scratchboard. You start your artistic process with a completely black board; slowly you scratch away the black to reveal your subject. Viewing that vast amount of black can be very intimidating, but the challenge speaks to her. Revealing the light, versus creating the dark, has a certain life philosophy that resonates with Tara. Using only small strokes of the blade to create an artwork also brings a sense of intimacy. To truly appreciate this type of artwork you are required to come close and experience the art as the artist does, at an arm’s length.

8th Place - Dru Hill - “Lickity Split”
Dru Hill has studied, created, and taught art in the United States and abroad. The daughter of a founding member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, she has been surrounded by artists and the arts throughout her life, working as a commercial illustrator, graphic designer, fine artist, and teacher. She received a BA/FA from WSU, and later studied Commercial Art. She also holds a Masters of Education degree from EWU.
Works by Dru Hill have been acquired by businesses and private collectors in the United States and Europe. She has shown extensively in galleries and many juried shows including: The Frye Art Museum, Pacific Gallery Artists, Northwest Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, Tubac Center for the Arts, Dallas Metro Arts Contemporary, Contemporary Artists of Southern Arizona, and Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild (where she is a Saguaro Fellow).
In this most current series of paintings, she has been exploring the patterns, textures, and forms of Sonoran Desert animals in a contemporary illustrative style using acrylic paints and mediums. She hopes to use these paintings of enigmatic Southwestern native creatures in a children’s book written by her daughter, Anna Hill.

9th Place - Faye Ives - “Detritus”
The use of patterns, textures, colors and glazing are to suggest shapes and venues also sometimes figures and faces in my acrylic/mixed media paintings. My hope is that the artwork will have the viewer stop, look and determine an emotion - a feeling of enjoyment.

10th Place - Peggy Curtis - “Southbank”
Peggy Olafson Curtis was born in Seattle, USA and grew up in nearby regions during the turbulent Sixties. Her love of photography began with a film camera and a high school course in photography—her first inspiration was a shot of her father removing a can of soup from a kitchen cupboard followed by his watery image looking back at her in the dark room developing tray.
The artistic inspiration came a few years later during a two-year residence in Japan. There she became immersed in the Japanese aesthetic after visiting the Empress Meiji’s iris garden on a glorious rainy day in May. Before her, stretched a row of shiny black umbrellas as visitors meandered along the garden path and gardeners in black rain gear waded among the iris plants, snipping spent blossoms. She was hooked on beauty. She studied the Sogetsu school of flower arrangement, Japanese gardens, painting, pottery, in every moment she could.
Later she completed a certificate in Photography from the University of Washington, studied at the Photographic Center Northwest, and continued her Japanese flower arranging classes. She has studied with the best of the best, including Sam Abell, Ben Willmore, Keron Psillas, and Charlie Waite in intensive workshops and mentorships.
Her work has been featured in Seattle and various other galleries in the US. She is a member of NANPA (The North American Nature Photography Association).
