The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 2 media categories of the Painting & Other Media Category and the Photography & Digital Category.
The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of July 2021 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.
The overall winning artists’ category of the 11th Annual "Landscapes" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion. In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing.
Winning artists will also have their art exhibition results posted and promoted on ArtJobs/ArtWeek. Artweek/Artjobs produces 800,000 page impressions per month, 280,000 website visitors per month and has 30,000 newsletter subscribers.

1st Place – Overall - Barbara Mierau-Klein - "Tetons Sunset”
Barbara Mierau-Klein is a digital artist recognized for her multi-layered, imaginative and colorful fine art images. A native of Germany, Barbara lives in the Washington, D.C. area but often travels the world as a passionate landscape and nature photographer since her teenage years.
Much of Barbara’s work is highly stylized and focuses on beautiful moments and evocative moods across a wide range of subjects. The inspiration for her images comes from many sources, often her own nature photography, but also books, song lyrics, movies, and works of other artists, old masters as well as contemporary digital artists.
Barbara’s work has been exhibited in a number of galleries in the US and Europe and has received numerous awards. Her images also appear regularly in international art magazines. Barbara is represented locally by Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda, MD.

2nd Place – Overall - Maureen Ravnik - "Storm over the Monument”
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Maureen Ravnik was born and raised in Minnesota. A brief visit to Colorado sold her on attending college there to pursue a career in sales & marketing. She stayed and never looked back. Working and traveling a lot in that discipline opened her eyes to the wonders of the American west and reawakened childhood tendencies to creatively document her discoveries. She began making images of the American west in hopes of preserving the history, the culture, and the dreams that shaped the west.
Maureen has accomplished many things with her photography including images placed in the Audubon International Top 250, local, national and international juried photography exhibitions, winning placements in monthly club competitions, state park calendars, images selected for use by the City of Littleton, and many images selected as editor picks on National Geographic and for publication. Her work has been the subject of several newspapers. She has co-authored 2 books that document the history, beauty and environment of the second largest natural area in the country.
Maureen was listed by LightSpaceTime.art as one of the top ten photographers to watch for in 2018. She was also selected for a month-long solo exhibition by LightSpaceTime.art for April 2019. At the end of 2019, Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announced their “Year in Review” recap. This annual feature reviews and promotes the gallery’s 12 top winning artists for the 12 individual monthly art exhibitions. In 2019, the gallery received more than 9,703+ entries for their art competitions and Maureen’s art was selected for what the gallery considered one of the best 13 entries from their themed exhibitions. Maureen was selected again for a 2-week, solo showcase by LightSpaceTime.art for March, 2020 and January 2021.
Maureen has also served as a juror for the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts in Colorado.
ARTIST STATEMENT: Maureen is an emerging talent whose methods and techniques are largely self-taught. Part of Maureen’s time is spent outdoors taking in and capturing scenery, wildlife, and exploring other methods for interpreting and sharing what she sees and experiences along the way. She is deeply inspired by the work of Ansel Adams and Art Wolfe. Part of Maureen’s work is also derived from her imagination. Her greatest satisfaction comes from taking the file from the camera and into the computer to develop composites. The results reflect her personal feelings and beliefs, events, culture, etc. that are best expressed through artistic interpretations.

3rd Place – Overall - Stephen Edwards - "Cold Snap”
I have been painting in watercolors for over 40 years. It is my preferred medium. I also enjoy oils and depending on the subject (and what I am trying to convey to the viewer), that determines the medium that I use. I have found that the challenge of watercolors gives me a reason to explore the many techniques and subjects its versatility offers up to an artist. It opens more experimental avenues to me than oils.
My philosophy in painting can be summed up by looking at what appears to be an eclectic collection of finished works. I am always searching for the next subject that will make me grow as an artist even at the age I am. Every painting should be a challenge to get to your next painting. I can’t imagine myself finding a niche, day in and day out painting the same thing. I want to be able look back at each work as a standalone piece that cannot really be grouped collectively. My mission is to make each work painting better than the last.

4th Place – Overall - Sophia Kelly Shultz - "Hemlock Hole 1”
Whether she is doing fiber art, drawing portraits, painting landscapes, or taking photographs, it has often been said that Sophia Kelly Shultz sees things that others might miss. Attention to fine detail, to elements like texture and lighting, is an offshoot both of her fiber art, which includes beading and “fancy work,” and her work as a painter and portraitist. Seeing things that others don't, particularly when they are on the ground, stems from a lifetime of rockhounding—of simply looking down. Or looking up: her father was a birder, but she often saw the clouds rather than the birds.
Sophia's other work—visually chatty, abundant with color and expression—reflects her ebullient public personality. Her photography, by contrast, reflects her quieter, more private side.
The daughter of a commercial artist, Philadelphia native Sophia Kelly Shultz was fortunate enough to be raised in a household where art was something that you did every day. Encouraged by her mother, who provided art supplies and who never, ever said, “Oh no, honey, you can't do that,” she spent her early years drawing up the proverbial storm. While a student in Egyptology at the University of Pennsylvania, she began drawing portraits featuring a fantasy or science fiction spin (and was proud to have been called a sell out by art students).
More recently, she has turned her attention to photography and fiber arts: embroidery, beading, and sewing. Her needlework has been well received, and has been recognized as outstanding in a number of exhibitions.
Cheered on by her heroically patient husband David, she works in the attic their 140-year-old house (yes, there is a madwoman in the attic). They share the house with a neurotic-yet-still-springy-at-16 English Springer Spaniel, and a very small cat who likes to sit on her shoulder and watch her work.

5th Place – Overall - Tom Guetersloh - "Clear Creek”
Tom Guetersloh is a self-taught artist and has had no formal training. He began drawing and painting at the age of eight years old. During his elementary and high school years, he won several national scholastic art competitions. His inspiration comes from his many years as an avid outdoorsman. He enjoys capturing the beauty of the natural world around him and painting in a photo realistic style.
The artwork provided is a reflection of natural environments in and around Southern Illinois. Tom’s preferred medium is acrylic on canvass. He embraces the challenge acrylic paints provide when layering and building color and depth. In 2019, one of Tom’s acrylic on canvass paintings was chosen for display in an art exhibition at Art St. Louis titled “Heaven and Earth”.

6th Place – Overall - Nathanael Cox - "Cotton Candy”
Man has a natural inclination to explore. Whether it be pushing the boundaries of our technical limitations or seeking to map out the world and the galaxy, exploration is a staple of the human experience. As a classically trained engineer, I can attest to this statement. Through my photography, I seek to merge the technicality of digital photography and the beauty of nature in order to inspire the viewer to travel and expand one’s horizons.

7th Place – Overall - Tony Podue - "Virginia”
Grandson of Anton Podue, a Slav fisherman immigrant to San Pedro, and son of Nick Podue, a local Marine Clerk and artist, native San Pedran Tony Podue learned to see and represent life as it is. Tony began his interest in art at a very early age, when he used to sit and watch his father recreate the spectacular views of the harbor area. Showing such a devout interest, his mentor provided paint, brush, and canvas to enable him to complete his first oil painting at the age of 6. He entered his first art competition as a sophomore in high school and took the top prize. As a senior of San Pedro High School, Tony is the only artist to win first place in both painting and photography in the school’s annual art show. He also won several awards in local and national painting and photography competitions that same year.
As Tony moved on with life, he pushed art off to become a backseat hobby for more than two decades, although his desire to create art remained strong. But over the years, there seemed to be more availability to pursue the more artistic past time. His father had served as the vice president of San Pedro Art Association for several years and continually encouraged Tony to join the Association. Before his passing in 1999, he provided Tony with a membership subscription to the Association for his birthday. This rekindled Tony’s artistic juices and gave him the excuse he needed to return to paints on a more continual basis.

8th Place – Overall - Julia Doemland - "Ridge Pond”
Julia Doemland started pursuing her interest in fine arts in college, first at Parsons School of Design and then at Brooklyn College, where many New York City artists taught. Living in New York City in the 1980’s was an exciting time for a young art student, and Julia was influenced by the vibrant and talented group of artists teaching at Brooklyn College during that time. She had the opportunity to work in the printmaking studio and to study with highly regarded painters and printmakers. She later went on to study other interest and remained in academia teaching exercise and sport psychology at the college level before retiring.
Now, after a fulfilling work life outside of the arts, Julia has returned to her first love, painting the landscape. She lives in the Sourlands mountain region of central New Jersey, a rich and diverse landscape characterized by mature forest, wetlands, and farms. This unique variation in landscape has been the inspiration for her work and pastels have been her medium of expression. Her artistic choices come from her early morning walks through the Sourlands as she looks for that ‘special’ relationship between light and shadow and for scenes that elicit a sense of wonder and appreciation for the landscape.
Julia’s landscape paintings have been included in the Red Rock Pastel Society, New Jersey Pastel Society, Adirondack Pastel Society and Central Mass. Pastel Society shows in 2021, as well as being honored with two silver awards in Camelback Gallery competitions and an honorable mention for a painting included in the New Jersey Pastel Society.

9th Place – Overall - Garret Demarest - "Joshua Tree Hike”
These photographic art images were developed by Garret Demarest of Palm Springs, CA. Garret's work has evolved over time. His initial interest was in capturing images of objects but soon turned to people, animals, plants, and flowers as he grew in his studies in psychology and human development as well as his personal connection to animals. His early focus was on “spontaneous portraiture” capturing personalities of people either unaware or just being themselves.
Garret was mentored by New York industrial designer, Robert G. Newbauer who encouraged him to capture his “decisive moment” in his originality and storytelling. He was also inspired by viewing the photography of Walker Evans as well as National Geographic photos. His biggest compliments came from people familiar with his subjects who saw their friends and family refreshed and in a new light. Garret’s later career as an organizational development consultant, took him around the world providing the opportunity to photograph clouds and cloud formations outside airplane windows, and people and places that captured something unique and spontaneous.
More recently, he has become somewhat of a “Cat Photographer” capturing portraits of him and his partner’s award-winning cats. He now spends his free time immersed in his hobby of photographic art where he manipulates original photographs into abstract images resembling paintings of the “Color Field School” brought to life by Mark Rothko and other abstract impression artists in the Mid-20th Century, thus creatively blurring the lines between photography and painting. His technique allows for creating any type of abstract image while using the color from an original photograph.
These images represent manipulated, abstract impressionistic images of landscapes as well as sunrises, sunsets, travel scenes, and hiking scenes. The object is to capture or create an image that inspires connection. Light, color, patterns, textures, and reflections are about seeing the world in new ways thereby allowing an emotional transformative process to take place. These photos are about the power of the human soul to respond.

10th Place – Overall - Meyriel J. Edge - "Laundry Day”
I began drawing and painting my surroundings as a child in North Wales, continued through art school, college, a career as a high school art educator and beyond. This “beyond’ stage is proving to be exciting, ironically due to lockdown. With little else to distract me, I have loosened up and focused on the way realism easily slides into abstraction and vice versa. Landscapes lend themselves to this. Although I live in USA, currently I am back in Wales painting landscapes containing my favourite trees on a limestone outcrop, a beautiful nature reserve. I am submitting two of those, one being a tree from which generations of children have swung, a more abstract one based on a Welsh landscape, and two Utah ones.
