Artist Biography

Heidi Dehncke majored in Illustration and also studied both painting and photography at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She won several art contests as a child and teenager and began doing professional renderings and projects for publication shortly after her time at Pratt.

Eventually, Dehncke transformed her art and worked as a video producer, journalist, photographer and editor. Along with the creativity necessary for editing video she was also able to employ her design and photography talents. She worked as a producer for “InSport”, About.com, PLUM TV, and more. She also produced, directed and was the filmmaker for “Dust to Dust: The Health Effects of 9/11,” which premiered on The Sundance Channel in 2006.

Dehncke’s photography has appeared and placed in several national juried competitions as well as several publications. She describes her photography as energizing and dramatic and focuses on captivating imagery effected by light and shadow. This includes images that she finds particularly inspiring for her to paint and interpret.

Her photography influences her painting. Dehncke has been painting for years and is pursuing painting as her primary creative endeavor. She showed work in Basking Ridge’s “Exhale” (2020) and was invited to Studio Channel Islands Collector’s Choice 2021. She also recently had work included in Biafarin’s Diversia: Earth - 2021 online exhibition as well as The Rhode Island Watercolor Society’s “Spring Forward 2021,”

She finds her biggest inspiration to be rooted in capturing and reinterpreting nature. Dehncke works in Acrylics and Oils.

Artist Statement

While painting most of my life, I had the opportunity to move back to New Jersey in 2019 and pursue my fine art painting, mostly concentrating on nature. My paintings usually begin with nature exploration - hikes in nature that inspire and provide a form of therapy, renewal, and connection. After I photograph my inspiration, I devise painting my interpretation. I usually work in acrylic or oils and the size of the canvas depends on how I envision the finished art. The process is also about how I feel when I am painting. One influences the other and it is truly a symbiotic relationship between myself and the artwork. I paint in a modern impressionist style – which I am compelled to do, given how painting, the act itself, makes me feel.
