Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is very pleased to announce that Athalie Taylor has been selected as one of the four artists of the gallery’s fifth “Solo Art Series” Art Competition. Athalie will now have a month long solo art exhibition and she will be featured on the gallery’s front page, in the Gallery’s YouTube Channel, as well as in the “Solo Art Series” archive.
Athalie Taylor is a digital artist and she will be promoted by the gallery with an extensive public relations campaign, as well through the gallery’s broad social media network. Also, part of her award package is that she is now featured as an Artsy.net Light Space & Time promoted artist. In addition, she will be featured on the gallery’s YouTube channel and with an event postcard.
The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition; 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. These elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month long solo art exhibitions. This is the fifth “Solo Art Series” Art Competition the gallery has conducted.

Artist Biography:
Athalie Taylor is a digital artist who was born and grew up in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She moved to Tasmania in 1970 and has called this island home since.
Her initial training was in the textile area where she gained a Diploma of Needlecraft at Emily McPherson College, Melbourne. Other studies later included art, she was awarded the Diploma of Art, Craft and Design at TAFE (Technical and Further Education), Launceston, Tasmania in the 1990s. She did other studies in basic Graphic Design, Fashion Drawing, Historical Costume and completed the first year of University studies in Art. Her career took over as she gained a full-time teaching position at TAFE, firstly in the Textile and Clothing section, later in the Art, Craft and Design department.
In her early life and training her strengths were in the design and skills side of textiles, at first in fabric, including machine embroidery, fabric manipulation, hand embroidery, texturizing fabrics with stitch, beads, etc. and later in artworks.
More recently she has embraced photography leading to her passion, digital art. The camera is her tool, her paintbrush, her pen, her pencil. She is often found moving it, twisting it, turning it, bending it’s will to create the beginnings of her journey. Next comes the selection, the adding and subtracting, the refinement to reveal the essence of the design, her thoughts and her idea.
She experiments with and pushes her camera to its limits to create the initial stage of each piece before she takes the images into various post processing programs to explore the possibilities, develop the idea and finally hone the work. At other times she works exclusively in the many editing programs she has, creating abstract artworks.
Athalie chooses subjects, often simple in concept, looks for pattern, shape, line, textures and colour. She is fascinated by reflections, shadows, texture, colour and light and how it plays on the subject creating an endless variety of options in the carefully planned compositions.
She finds the material for her artwork in very many places in the urban and natural environment.
Artists whose works excite and motivate Athalie are Wassily Kandinsky, Mark Rothco, Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, Kenneth Noland, Kazimir Malevich, Hans Hoffman, Joan Miró i Ferrà to name just a few. She loves the colour, the freedom they exhibited in their works, the shapes (sometimes fluid other times solid and static), the lines and very often the geometrics they explored, all are very dear to her own art and exploration.
Athalie has had work in recent exhibitions in Northern Tasmania including her first solo exhibition in 2015.
Artist Statement:
“Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, colour and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.” Rudolf Arnheim, Visual Thinking
My exploration into abstract art began when I was very young, I always drew. As I grew up doodles appeared on every scrap of paper left unattended… envelopes, my school books and later college notes, magazines, the phone book, nothing was left unadorned.
As an adult I was excited and motivated by art that included simple lines, (straight, curved, and those that meandered through the piece) geometric shapes, circles, any patterned works, especially textured pieces. I was drawn by strong colours, simple compositions, unusual ideas and aspects. Many artists inspired me like Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Hans Hoffman and others, they still do today.
I use my camera in unexpected non-conventional ways. I am constantly forcing it to do what I want, to get the starting point I need for an artwork. The subject can be out of focus or taken pin sharp, it all depends on what I am trying to achieve at the time. Often there are different versions of the same subject which are later melded together to make the piece. Ideas develop and grow within the creation of the piece, I often get lost in the process and when I’m done wonder how I finally reached that point.
Some effects are achieved in the camera while others are developed and created in post processing.
On the more graphic side of my art I explore shapes; circles, lines, angles, triangles, all kinds of forms. I often distort and manipulate sections or all of a piece. Often the graphic creations are added to the photographic idea, other times they stand alone.
I am fascinated by shadows, sometimes my own, and reflections, and they regularly feature in my work. I draw, I photograph, I design, I create, just for the love of it; the pure joy it gives me every day. This body of work represents my exploration of all things abstract, in my mind and from my imagination.
