1st Place – Overall - Ingrid Black – “The Cosmic Eye”

1st-place-OA-94-POM.-Ingrid-Black-–-The-Cosmic-Eye-bIngrid Black is a self-taught artist who has worked with acrylics for over 35 years. Since retiring from her real estate career in 2008, she has devoted herself to art. She has had four solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions since then. Her cityscapes were very popular in the eighties. She went on to paint a series of portraits of performing artists, capturing her subjects’ energy on stage - depicting them in a surrealistic style. When she submitted her portrait of Bob Marley to the Bob Marley website in 2012, it went viral.

While she was painting portraits, she liked to paint birds and other animals, on occasion, which led to a series of bird paintings - realistic depictions of birds in settings normally associated with human beings. Also very popular, these paintings tell a story, often with humorous undertones.

She ventured into abstracts in 2016. Her fascination with texture, colour, contrast and light is evident in her abstract creations. In 2020, David Stark, Editor/Publisher of two websites, who has been involved in the music scene in London, England for many years, purchased the right to use Magical Mystery Tour, her psychedelic painting of the Beatles, for the cover of his new book, It’s All Too Much.

Ingrid Black’s work comprises a wide range of styles and subject matter - she tries something new just about every year. Not doing so would make her feel as though she is standing still. She is a member of The Lakeshore Association of Artists in Pointe Claire, Quebec, and The Society of Canadian Artists.

3rd Place – Overall - John H Diephouse - "Inclined to Rise”

3rd-Place-OA-88-pd.-John-H-Diephouse-Inclined-to-RisebI am a primarily self-taught photographer who began exhibiting my images about fifteen years ago. This transition marked a qualitative shift in both my interest level and satisfaction with the results, due to the advantages of digital over traditional film photography. The ability to take a large volume of images without the expense of film and the ease of edits in the “digital darkroom” has encouraged me to experiment and expand my skills significantly. After retiring from a professional management career, I have taken advantage of my time in retirement to explore the technical and creative sides of this media more fully.

At this point in my development, I seek to share images with which I has a strong and instinctive personal connection. Images may be simply documentary, invoke a sense of time and place, or resonate as an abstract blend of color, shape or form. Others provoke an indefinable question that does not readily yield answers without further study and reflection.

My creative process follows an intuitive yet patterned path, from capturing a digital image through the process of interacting with and refining the image, searching for the combination of elements that produces an instinctive but undeniable connection. Most often, the images that provoke the strongest connection are those that do not produce an immediate reaction but provoke a response through repeated contact and consideration over time.

I have exhibited widely and been given positive notices in local, regional, and national exhibitions, as well as national fine art photography magazines. My photographs were also selected to hang in the Michigan Governor’s Mansion as part of a yearlong exhibition highlighting State of Michigan artists.

6th Place – Overall - Stan Johnson - "Post Modern Whooey”

6th-Place-OA-15-pd.-Stan-Johnson-Post-Modern-Whooey-cStan Johnson moved to Arizona in 1989 and co-founded Recent Developments, LLC with his partner Cheryl Hrudka. Recent Developments is a fine art photographic concern specializing in landscapes for corporate and hospital environments. The partners took a new direction shortly after 2007 and began to explore the virtually unlimited non-representational possibilities offered by a variety of digital software.

Digital art’s nearest living relative is photography. Generations passed before photography was allowed in the “family” picture. Things are moving a good deal faster today. Digital art is facing a similar gauntlet, but the course will be far shorter.

“I am a structural expressionist. At first, the two concepts seem ill suited. This awkward synthesis creates the dynamic tension in my work. By alternating structure (expression) in the figure and expression (structure) in ground, the forces at play can be reconciled. This process can be reversed as well.”

7th Place – Overall - Elle McCarthy - "Split Personality”

7th-Place-OA-14-POM.-Elle-McCarthy-Split-Personality-bElle McCarthy is a late blooming, self-taught artist, who is based in New Jersey, USA.  In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed her to find a release valve for the associated stress.  Art came calling; she answered. A spare bedroom was transformed into an “artist den”.  Her husband and her social media friends gave her encouragement to continue pursuing her newly found passion.  Several of her pieces were selected as finalists in the many online, juried art contests she entered, just four months after she created her very first painting.  She is now striving to improve her technical skills and works in the studio daily.

10th Place – Overall - Barbara Kreutter - "Edge & Conclusion”

10th-Place-OA-111-pd.-Barbara-Kreutter-Edge-Conclusion-bOver many years of being a professional weaver, glass blower and then a photographer, the interplay of colour has been Barb’s creative motivator. She has always been drawn to capture the subtle, beautiful patterns and textures found in everyday life.

Photography has allowed Barb to not only document what she sees, but to express how she feels when seeing it. Over the past few years, she has been exploring uses for the technological components within her camera, using more abstract methods like intentional camera movement and in camera multiple exposures, to create her images.

She is known to tell others “It is my wish that you will enjoy how I see life, as if you were standing next to me and are inspired to look more carefully at the world around you. Maybe you will discover beauty where you thought there was none.”
